Become a Paid Family Caregiver

Medicaid-Focused Step-by-Step Guide

At Visiting Neighbors, we help eligible family members turn the care they already provide into a paid caregiving role through Medicaid supported services. If you are already assisting a loved one with daily needs, you may qualify to be compensated.

Step 1: Check Basic Eligibility

To begin the process, the individual receiving care (your loved one) must typically:

  • Be enrolled in Medicaid

  • Require assistance with daily living activities (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, meals, or mobility

  • Live at home or in a community setting (not a full-time facility)

  • Have a documented medical need for in-home care

Step 2: Caregiver Qualification Review

We review the family caregiver to ensure program compliance:

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Must pass background screening (required by Medicaid programs)

  • Must be physically and emotionally able to provide care

  • Must complete required training and onboarding

Step 3: Application & Enrollment Support

Our team assists you with the paperwork and enrollment process:

  • Medicaid caregiver program application guidance

  • Required documentation support

  • Care plan review and setup

  • Scheduling of required assessments (if applicable)

We walk you through every step so nothing feels overwhelming or confusing.

Step 4: Care Plan Development

A personalized care plan is created based on your loved one’s needs, which may include:

  • Personal care (bathing, grooming, dressing)

  • Meal preparation and feeding support

  • Medication reminders

  • Mobility assistance

  • Safety supervision and companionship

This plan determines approved care hours and responsibilities.

Step 5: Training & Onboarding

Once approved, caregivers complete required training to ensure compliance and confidence:

  • CPR Certification

  • First Aid Certification

  • HIPAA Training

  • Ethics & Boundaries Training

  • Abuse & Neglect Reporting Training

  • De-escalation & Customer Service Training

Step 6: Start Getting Paid

After approval and onboarding:

  • You begin receiving hourly pay for approved caregiving services

  • Pay is based on authorized Medicaid care hours

  • Payments are processed through the approved care system/provider structure
